Heart of Darkness Promp #4
I see Marlow and Kurtz not alike more than I think they are alike. Talking with my classmates I have come to the conclusion that some of them thought that Marlow was the narrator. However, while reading I didn't feel this way. I just thought the narrator was an unnamed person throughout the story. Marlow is a "fresh water sailor" because of this Marlow had been through a lot during his childhood. I believe that if this is proven to be true that this may have something to do with the title, Heart of Darkness. tying this together kept me on my toes while reading, trying to decide how it really did relate to the characters. Marlow is the type of person to set himself apart from the other passengers on the ship. Marlow is one that is critical of imperialism also. While reading though, I saw Kurtz as the complete opposite. Although, readers may have interpreted Kurtz's personality based off of Marlows. The manager did find him dangerous, and from what I gathered, Kurtz is in favor of imperialism. He believes in the increasing of power continually.

I completely agree with you when you said that Kurtz and Marlow are more alike than they are the same. While of course they do have similarities, as most people when they search hard enough will find at least one common trait, the majority of their ideas are separate. Kurtz is really an interesting character because he is so smart he could accomplish so much if he wanted to. But, of course something always seems to get in his way and he really does not want to put in the effort to move the stumbling brick. But, on the other hand Marlow is not as smart but works very hard to earn what he has. Ultimately in the end the effort Marlow puts in pays off because he is still alive while Kurtz is dead.
